Check out the debut trailer for the new powerful drama "Moonlight," which focuses on three crucial stages in a young African-American man's life as he wrestles with his own sexual identity while growing up in the mean streets of Miami.

Based on the play "In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue" by Tarell McCraney, the film stars Naomie Harris (from the "James Bond" Films), Emmy-nominated actor Mahershala Ali (Netflix's House of Cards), Andre Holland (Cinemax's The Knick) and introducing up-and-coming actor Trevante Rhodes (HBO's Westworld) as the film's central character, Chiron.

Ashton Sanders (The Retrieval) is playing a younger, high-school version of Chiron. While Grammy-winning singer Janelle Monae will also appear in the film in her first acting gig.

Executive produced by Brad Pitt, under his production banner Plan B Ent., "Moonlight" is the second feature from writer-director Barry Jenkins (Medicine for Melancholy).

The A24-produced film is set to make its world premiere next month at the Toronto International Film Festival, and will then arrive in theaters on October 21.

synopsis:
Moonlight is the tender, heartbreaking story of a young man's struggle to find himself, told across three defining chapters in his life as he experiences the ecstasy, pain, and beauty of falling in love, while grappling with his own sexuality.

Anchored by astonishing performances and the singular vision of filmmaker Barry Jenkins, Moonlight is a groundbreaking exploration of masculinity -- a sensual, intoxicating piece of cinema that uncovers deep truths about the moments that define us, the people who shape us most, and the ache of love that can last a lifetime.
