Iranian-British horror filmmaker Babak Anvari makes an impressive debut with his political-tinged supernatural thriller "Under the Shadow," which was one of the breakout hits at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

Set in 1988, during the tail end of the Iranian Cultural Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War, the atmospheric horror film centers on an Iranian mother and her young daughter. Shortly after a failed Iraqi missile plunges through their apartment building's roof, the mother and daughter begin to experience strange paranormal occurrences inside their home, which leads their superstitious next-door-neighbors into believing the place is, in fact, plagued by an ancient Middle Eastern demonic spirit.

"Under the Shadow" features a strong performance by Iranian-German actress Narges Rashdi as the frantic mother. Meanwhile, newcomer Avin Manshadi plays her daughter, who may or may not be possessed by an external force.

Acquired by both Netflix and the indie distributor Vertical Entertainment, the film will open in theaters October 7 with a streaming release to follow.
