Matthew McConaughey contemplates the meaning of life and love in the newly released trailer for "The Sea of Trees," the latest drama from director Gus Van Sant, which also stars Naomi Watts and Ken Watanabe.

Set in Japan's notorious Aokigahara Forest (a real-life destination that has become a favorite spot for emotionally troubled tourists who are looking to end their lives), "The Sea of Trees" casts McConaughey as a science professor who finds himself hiking meanderingly through the infamous tree-covered terrain as he tries to come to grips with both his own spirituality and the deterioration of his marriage.

Along the way, McConaughey meets a fellow traveler, a Japanese businessman (Watanabe) who is similarly afflicted by spiritual doubts and personal tragedies.

The film, written by Chris Sparling (Buried), generated a mostly negative reaction from critics at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. Shortly after the premiere, McConaughey responded to the bad press by saying, "It was a great experience for me. I liked the experience of making (the film). And I'm glad we got the opportunity to introduce it to the world."

"The Sea of Trees" is currently scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters on August 26.

In this powerful story of love and redemption, Matthew McConaughey stars as Arthur Brennan, an American professor who travels to Japan in the midst of a personal crisis. As he wanders through a mysterious forest with a dark past, he experiences flashbacks of his fraught but loving relationship with his wife, Joan (Naomi Watts), and meets an enigmatic stranger, Takumi (Ken Watanabe), who is lost and injured. Arthur devotes himself to saving Takumi and returning him home to safety, and the two embark on a spiritual, life-changing journey of friendship, discovery, and healing -- one which may ultimately re-connect Arthur with his love for his wife.
