Antonio Banderas makes a stunning discovery in the trailer for "Finding Altamira," an upcoming period melodrama that's based on real events.

Banderas plays Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola, a real-life amateur Spanish archaeologist who, in 1879, came under intense scrutiny from both science and religious groups after discovering prehistoric cave drawings of bison that were first deemed as forgeries, but later accepted as being authentic.

Also starring Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani (Exodus: Gods and Kings, Rosewater) as the wife of Banderas' character, the film comes from 79-year-old English director Hugh Hudson, who is perhaps best known for helming the 1981 Academy Award-winning film "Chariots of Fire" and the 1984 blockbuster "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes."

Rupert Everett, Pierre Niney, Clement Sibony, Nicholas Farrell, and Allegra Allen round out the cast of the film, which is hitting theaters and VOD on September 16 before arriving on DVD and other digital platforms on September 27.

synopsis:
In 1879, Spanish archaeologist Marcelino (Antonio Banderas) and his daughter Maria (Allegra Allen) discover seemingly impossible paintings of galloping bison adorning the walls of a hidden cave. The cave of Altamira brings the world together in amazement, drawing people of all types to see the paintings in person. But, Marcelino soon realizes that the art on the walls must be 10,000 years old, earlier than anyone believes possible.

The theory threatens to tear Maria and Marcelino’s family apart while the outside world’s astonishment soon turns to fury and fear. The Catholic Church sees his claims as an attack on biblical truth while scientists prove just as dogmatic and reactionary. Maria’s fairytale world grows darker as her family faces disaster and Marcelino’s discovery is repressed. Only their love for each other can guide them toward redemption as Marcelino fights to spread the truth.
