A $45 million-budgeted movie about an ambitious young stripper trying to pursue her dreams of being a Las Vegas showgirl. Still, to this day, it's hard to imagine that the film ever got made in the first place.

Before it became known as the 1995 box-office disaster and Razzie Winner, "Showgirls" started as the latest provocative screenplay by Joe Eszterhas, the notorious screenwriter of "Basic Instinct," who sold it for a whopping $2 million. Hoping to duplicate the success of "Basic Instinct," the studio went on to sign a deal with its director, Paul Verhoeven, and gave him complete control over final cut. Even by today's standards, that's unheard of.

Universally panned by critics, the NC-17 film starred former teen actress Elizabeth Berkley, of "Saved by the Bell" fame, as a Las Vegas runaway-turned-exotic dancer, named Nomi, who dukes it out with a rival dancer to win the top spot in a high-class showgirl show.

Though Berkley, Verhoeven, and Eszterhas were professionally smeared by the initial outcome, the movie, nevertheless, gradually gained a cult following among the midnight film crowds, and earning huge success on the home entertainment market.

"Showgirls" is now considered to be a cult camp classic -- a film that's so bad it's good. Perhaps, that's why it has recently been restored in 4K resolution for a brand-new Blu-Ray and DVD release in France. The film will also be re-released in French theaters in September.
