National Geographic Channel has released the first trailer for "Killing Reagan," an upcoming cable movie about the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan.

Directed by Rod Lurie (The Contender, TV's Commander in Chief), the television drama stars Tim Matheson (The West Wing) as Ronald Reagan, Emmy-winner Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City) as Nancy Reagan, and up-and-comer Kyle S. More as Reagan's would-be assassin John Hinckley, Jr.

Chronicling the events that led to the infamous incident, the movie is told from two alternating perspectives: one from Reagan, who was just two months into his presidency when he was rushed to the hospital with a bullet lodged in his lung. The other follows Hinckley, a 20-something failed songwriter who was so psychotically obsessed with actress Jodie Foster that he carried out the assassination just to impress her.

Based on the latest bestseller in a series of history books by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard, "Killing Reagan" is set to premiere Sunday, October 16 on NatGeo TV.
