After years of public scrutiny, controversial actor Mel Gibson is back behind the camera, directing his first movie since 2006's "Apocalypto." Gibson helms "Hacksaw Ridge," a new powerful war film that asks, does a soldier need a weapon to be a hero?

Check out the debut trailer for Gibson's fact-based film, starring former "Spiderman" actor Andrew Garfield as real-life WWII hero Desmond Doss, who was drafted in 1942, but refused to shoot or carry a rifle into combat due to his strong religious beliefs. Deemed as a coward by his fellow officers, Doss was eventually sent to the front lines of one of the war's bloodiest battles (The Battle of Okinawa) where he served as an Army medic.

Without firing a weapon, Doss braved heavy enemy gunfire and ended up rescuing 75 wounded soldiers from the battlefield. And for his efforts, Doss earned a place in the history books as the very first conscientious objector to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Also starring Sam Worthington, Vince Vaughn, Teresa Palmer, Luke Bracey, Rachel Griffiths, and Hugo Weaving, "Hacksaw Ridge" will be coming to theaters November 4th.

synopsis:
HACKSAW RIDGE is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
