Elijah Wood unwillingly becomes a Watson-like sidekick to an eccentric British private-eye in the newly-released Comic-Con trailer for "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency," a new wacky detective show from screenwriter Max Landis (Chronicle, American Ultra).

Starring "Penny Dreadful" actor Samuel Barnett in the lead role, the BBC America series is the small-screen adaptation of the 1987 novel by "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" author Douglas Adams.

The premise concerns a British man named "Dirk Gently" (played by Barnett), who claims to run a private detective agency. Though instead of finding physical clues, he uses "holistic" methods and his clairvoyant abilities to solve his missing-person (and missing-cat) cases.

Elijah Wood plays a guy named Todd, who, somehow, gets drawn into Dirk's wild adventures after getting fired as a bellhop.

Director Dean Parisot, of "Galaxy Quest" fame, directs the first two episodes of the eight-episode series, which co-stars Hannah Marks, Michael Eklund, Richard Schiff, Aaron Douglas, Neil Brown Jr., Mpho Koaho, Dustin Milligan, and Miguel Sandoval.

"Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" is set to premiere Saturday, October 22 on BBC America.

synopsis:
"Dirk Gently" is a serialized comedic thriller that follows the bizarre adventures of eccentric "holistic" detective Dirk Gently and his reluctant assistant Todd, as they wend their way through one big, seemingly insane mystery, crossing unlikely paths with a bevy of wild and sometimes dangerous characters, each episode landing them a few random steps closer to uncovering the truth.
