Fresh from its debut at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, here's the very first trailer for "American Gods," STARZ's new fantasy series that's based on author Neil Gaiman's award-winning bestseller.

Starring Ricky Whittle (CW's 100) and Ian McShane (HBO's Deadwood), the series is set in a modern world where mythological gods secretly exist. A freshly released convict, who goes by the name Shadow Moon (Whittle), endures the sudden and tragic death of his girlfriend. He soon meets the mysterious Mr. Wednesday (McShane) and reluctantly becomes his bodyguard and traveling companion, in exchange Wednesday introduces him to a secret hidden world where ancient and modern gods have been waging a war with one another.

Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, NBC's Hannibal) and Michael Green (Kings, The River) are the executive producers and showrunners of the series, which boasts a strong supporting cast that includes Pablo Schreiber, Peter Stormare, Gillian Anderson, Crispin Glover, Emily Browning, Yetide Badaki, Bruce Langley, Cloris Leachman, comedian Dane Cook, and Kristin Chenoweth (who was just announced at Comic-Con to have been added to the cast).

Director David Slade (NBC's Hannibal, 30 Days of Night) is directing the pilot episode, which will premiere sometime in 2017.

synopsis:
Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" has been translated into over 30 languages and earned numerous accolades including Hugo, Nebula and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novel. The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society's modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.
