Set to make its North American debut next week at the Fantasia International Film Festival, "Shelley" is a psychological horror thriller about a young immigrant maid who agrees to bear a baby for a childless couple, only to realize she has made a contract that could bring dire consequences to her and the world.

Starring Cannes-winning Romanian actress Cosmina Stratan (Beyond the Hills), Danish actress Ellen Dorrit Petersen (King of Devil's Island) and Danish actor Peter Christoffersen (The Absent One), the English-language film hails from the producers of the Danish werewolf horror-drama "When Animals Dream" and is marking the feature debut of writer-director Ali Abbasi.

IFC Midnight is planning to release "Shelley" in theaters and on VOD later this month, on July 29th. Watch the trailer, above.

synopsis:
An unholy force takes root in an expectant mother's womb in this eerie, dread-inducing shocker. Privileged, nouveau-eco-hippies Louise (Ellen Dorrit Petersen) and Kasper (Peter Christoffersen) live off the grid in a remote home in the woods. Unable to conceive, the couple arranges for their immigrant maid, Elena (Cosmina Stratan), to act as a surrogate mother in exchange for payment. But as Elena becomes mysteriously sicker with each passing day, fears mount about what may be growing inside her. The debut feature from director Ali Abbasi is a stylish, atmospheric plunge into primal terror.
