If you thought Steven Spielberg's giant-centric fantasy movie "The BFG" could have done better with some darker imagery and a more serious tone. Well then, you might want to check this out: it's the new full-length trailer for Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona's visually stunning adaptation of the award-winning children's novel "A Monster Calls," which is featuring the gravelly voice of Liam Neeson.

Starring Lewis MacDougall (Pan) and Felicity Jones (Star Wars: Rogue One), the film centers on an emotionally distraught 12-year-old English boy (MacDougall) who, while living with his terminally ill mother (Jones), magically -- and unintentionally -- summons a gigantic tree monster (Neeson) from a fantasy world he created in his drawings.

Bayona, who perhaps is best known for directing the acclaimed tsunami drama "The Impossible" with Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland, helms from a script by author Patrick Ness, who also wrote the 2011 book the film is based on.

(Note: the story concept was originally conceived by British author Siobhan Dowd, who sadly died from breast cancer before she could write the book. Author Patrick Ness and illustrator Jim Kay were subsequently assigned to complete the project.)

Co-starring Sigourney Weaver and Toby Kebbell, "A Monster Calls" is set to open in theaters on December 23.

Based on the award-winning children's fantasy novel, 12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall) attempts to deal with his mother’s (Felicity Jones) illness and the bullying of his classmates by escaping into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales that explore courage, loss, and faith.
