Seventeen years ago this month, Americans were stunned and saddened by the tragic death of 38-year-old John F. Kennedy Jr., who, while on the way to attend a family wedding in Martha's Vineyard, perished when the small plane he was piloting crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. His wife Carolyn and her sister, Lauren, were also killed in the accident.

During his life, John F. Kennedy Jr. was a Manhattan celebrity who wore many hats and was given many labels: He was the beloved heir to a political dynasty; a well-known socialite; a national heartthrob; a New York lawyer, and a magazine publisher who founded the now-defunct political publication, George. Constantly hounded by paparazzi and heavily scrutinized by the media throughout the '80s and '90s, JFK Jr. was, arguably, the American version of Princess Diana.

Now, Spike TV is planning to premiere a new documentary on the life of John F. Kennedy Jr., featuring interviews with some of his famous friends and supporters -- which include actor Robert De Niro, CNN journalist Chris Cuomo, super-model Cindy Crawford, and former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson.

Directed by Derik Murray, "I Am JFK Jr." will air on Monday, August 1st on the Spike network. It will also be released in select theaters on July 20th.
