You wouldn't know it from looking at him, but hidden under all that fantastic prosthetic makeup is the human face of Idris Elba. The acclaimed British actor of "Beasts of No Nation" and TV's "Luther" is completely unrecognizable as he transforms himself into the alien villain "Krall" for the upcoming film "Star Trek Beyond."

Though details on Elba's "nihilistic" character have been kept mostly under wraps, a newly-released featurette is offering "Star Trek" fans a bit of insight.

"We wanted (Krall) to have a complex reason behind his bad-guy-ness," says Simon Pegg in the above video. Pegg not only plays the Enterprise's engineer Scotty in the film. but also took on the job of co-writing the screenplay with writer Doug Jung (2003's Confidence) for "Fast and Furious" director Justin Lin, who's now at the helm of the franchise.

"Star Trek Beyond" is set to open everywhere July 22.

"Star Trek Beyond," the highly anticipated next installment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Abrams in 2009, returns with director Justin Lin ("The Fast and the Furious" franchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew.
