Oscar-winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen started their movie career with a real, big bang … and, perhaps, a few loud clangs of a shovel.

Fans of Coen brother's 1984 Sundance-winning film debut, the cult off-kilter crime thriller "Blood Simple," will be pleased to know that it's been remastered with a brand-new pristine 4K restoration, and will be screened in select cities in July, via Janus Films.

Starring a young Frances McDormand, and a string of character actors, John Getz, Dan Hedaya, and M. Emmet Walsh, the offbeat neo-noir is about an unhappy married woman who finds herself in a quandary with her lover after she discovers her suspicious husband has hired a shady private detective with an itchy trigger finger.

(The movie is also one of the first films shot by cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld, who would later become a successful Hollywood director, helming such blockbusters as "Get Shorty," "The Addams Family" films and the "Men in Black" films)

The 4K version of "Blood Simple" will hit theaters this Friday, July 1st, opening in New York and San Francisco before arriving in Los Angeles on July 29th; with other cities to follow.

It will also be released on Blu-Ray and DVD by the Criterion Collection on September 20th.

synopsis:
This razor-sharp modern film noir, the first film by Joel and Ethan Coen, introduced the brothers' inimitable black humor and eccentric sense of character, a sensibility that has helped shape the course of contemporary American cinema. Deep in the heart of Texas, a sleazy bar owner suspects his wife of having an affair and hires a private detective to confirm his suspicions -- only to have the crosshairs turned back on himself. Playfully shot by Barry Sonnenfeld and featuring a haunting score by Carter Burwell and a cunning performance by Frances McDormand, Blood Simple was a career-launching film for this ensemble and the first articulation of the precision of style that has defined the Coens’ work ever since.
