In "Free State of Jones," Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey plays Newt Knight, a real-life Mississippi farmer and a controversial folk hero who was a Southern Unionist and the rebel leader of the Knight Company.

In 1862, Knight fought in the Civil War for the South. Disillusioned by the Confederacy's war efforts, he abandoned his regiment to start a rebellion in Mississippi, in which he led a small rebel army composed of black slaves, white farmers, and other Confederate deserters.

Written and directed by Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, The Hunger Games) and also starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali, and Keri Russell, the film is set to open in theaters this weekend, starting Friday, June 24.

Distributor STX Entertainment has released an extended scene from the movie, which shows McConaughey as Newt Knight, who is trying to protect his young nephew (played here by Jacob Lofland) on the battlefield.

Free State of Jones is an epic action-drama set during the Civil War, and tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. His marriage to a former slave, Rachel, and his subsequent establishment of a mixed race community was unique in the post-war South. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War.
