After seven seasons in the NFL, New Orleans Saints safety and local hero Steve Gleason retired from the game of football, not knowing that he would soon be in the toughest fight of his life.

In the upcoming heart-wrenching documentary "Gleason," filmmaker Clay Tweel (Finders Keepers) examines the life of former football player Steve Gleason, who, in 2011, publicly announced that he was diagnosed with ALS, generally known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Featuring home-video diaries shot by Gleason, the film chronicles the distressing time of his diagnosis and physical deterioration, during which he and his wife, Michel, were trying to conceive their first child.

Winner of both the Special Jury and Audience Award at this year's SXSW Film Festival, "Gleason" was acquired by Amazon Studios mere days after its world premiere in January at Sundance. With a partnering deal with Open Road Films, the documentary will receive a theatrical release this summer, starting on July 29th.

synopsis:
The hit documentary from the 2016 Sundance Film Festival goes inside the life of Steve Gleason, the former New Orleans Saints defensive back who, at the age of 34, was diagnosed with ALS and given a life expectancy of two to five years. Weeks later, Gleason found out his wife, Michel, was expecting their first child. A video journal that began as a gift for his unborn son expands to chronicle Steve's determination to get his relationships in order, build a foundation to provide other ALS patients with purpose, and adapt to his declining physical condition --utilizing medical technologies that offer the means to live as fully as possible.
