"Freedom of speech means you can say whatever you want. But what you can't do is lie and expect not to be accountable for it."

It's a powerful and pointed statement that Oscar-winning actress Rachel Weisz says in the debut trailer for "Denial," a new gut-punching drama that's based on the unbelievable true story of American professor and Jewish historian Deborah E. Lipstadt, who, in 1994, was forced to prove that millions of Jews were killed in Nazi gas chambers in a highly-publicized British libel court case brought on by notorious English Holocaust denier David Irving.

Acclaimed English actor Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner, The King's Speech) plays Irving in the film, in which he's seen in the trailer making atrocious claims about the existence of the Jewish genocide: "I got a thousand dollars to give to anyone who could show me a document that proves the Holocaust!" It's an outrageous comment that becomes even more appalling when public perception seemed to be shifting toward a distorted view of history at the time.

"What if we lose (the case)," Weisz says as Lipstadt in the above trailer. "Suddenly, it becomes more acceptable to say the Holocaust didn't happen."

Also starring two-time Oscar nominee Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton) and "Sherlock" actor Andrew Scott, "Denial" is directed by veteran English helmer Mick Jackson (The Bodyguard, Temple Grandin) from a script by acclaimed writer David Hare (The Hours, The Reader), based off of Lipstadt's 1993 memoir "History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier."

"Denial" is set to hit theaters on September 30th.

synopsis:
Based on the acclaimed book "History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier," Denial recounts Deborah E. Lipstadt's (Rachel Weisz) legal battle for historical truth against David Irving (Timothy Spall), who accused her of libel when she declared him a Holocaust denier. In the English legal system, the burden of proof is on the accused, therefore it was up to Lipstadt and her legal team to prove the essential truth that the Holocaust occurred.
