Though he was rumored to be considering retirement, 80-year-old British auteur Ken Loach is still going strong. His latest film, a socially-minded drama about an ailing and out-of-work carpenter struggling to access welfare benefits, has already received numerous accolades, including the coveted Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

Featuring a powerful dramatic performance by English comedian Dave Johns in the title role, check out the first trailer for Loach's much-buzzed-about drama "I, Daniel Blake."

Written by Loach's longtime scriptwriter Paul Laverty (Jimmy's Hall, The Wind That Shakes the Barley), the film also stars up-and-coming British actress Hayley Squires (A Royal Night Out) as a financially-struggling single mother who finds herself in a similar welfare situation to that of Daniel Blake.

"I, Daniel Blake" is set to open in the U.K. on October 21st, with a U.S. release to follow at a later date.

synopsis:
Daniel Blake, 59, (Dave Johns) has worked as a joiner most of his life in Newcastle. Now, for the first time ever, he needs help from the State. He crosses paths with single mother Katie (Hayley Squires) and her two young children, Daisy and Dylan. Katie's only chance to escape a one-roomed homeless hostel in London has been to accept a flat in a city she doesn’t know, some 300 miles away. Daniel and Katie find themselves in no-man's land, caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy as played out against the rhetoric of "striver and skiver" in modern-day Britain.
