The USA Network has released a new extended preview for "Queen of the South," the English-language remake of the popular telenovela "La Reina del Sur," about a low-level drug dealer's girlfriend and her rise to become the most powerful drug trafficker in the world.

Brazilian actress Alice Braga (City of God, Elysium) steps into the role of rising Queenpin Teresa Mendoza, which was previously played by Mexican superstar Kate del Castillo (who is the actress that had arranged the now-infamous meeting between Sean Penn and El Chapo) in the original telenovela.

The series, which is also based on Spanish author Arturo Perez-Reverte's best-selling international crime novel, hails from "Little Miss Sunshine" producer David T. Friendly and "The Final Girls" screenwriters M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller with "The Shield" producer Scott Rosenbaum serving as showrunner.

Greenlit for 13 episodes, "Queen of the South" also stars Mexican actress Veronica Falcon, Joaquim de Almeida (Our Brand Is Crisis), Justina Machado (Six Feet Under) and Hemky Madera (Ash vs Evil Dead).

TV helmer Charlotte Sieling (Homeland, Wayward Pines) helms the pilot episode, which is set to air on Thursday, June 23rd.

synopsis:
