Natural fears of the unknown come into play in the new U.S. trailer for the South Korean mystery horror thriller "The Wailing," which centers on an investigation involving a mysterious illness.

When locals in a remote village are stricken by an unidentified and deadly sickness, a small-town police officer (played by Korean actor Kwak Do-won, of "The Attorney") and a well-respected shaman (Korean superstar Hwang Jung-min, of "The Himalayas" and "Ode to My Father") who must figure out the cause. All fingers point to a strange Japanese hermit, who may be unjustly singled out as the scapegoat. He's played by Japanese actor Jun Kunimura, perhaps best known in the States for playing Boss Tanaka from the "Kill Bill" films.

Written and directed with white-knuckled precision by acclaimed Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin (2008's "The Chaser" and 2010's "The Yellow Sea"), "The Wailing" premiered to rave reviews last month at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.

Already a huge box-office hit in its native country, the Korean thriller will make its stateside debut this weekend, opening in select cities on Friday, June 3rd.

synopsis:
In this unbelievably tense supernatural thriller, a foreigner's mysterious appearance in a quiet, rural village causes suspicion among the locals -- suspicion which quickly turns to hysteria as the townspeople begin killing each other in brutal outbursts for seemingly no reason. As the investigating officer watches his daughter fall under the same savage spell, he agrees to consult a shaman for answers -- unknowingly escalating the situation into something far more dangerous.
