Portraying real-life Mississippi farmer-turned-Southern Unionist Newt Knight, Matthew McConaughey fights for "our children and their children's children" in a brand-new trailer for the Civil War thriller "Free State of Jones."

Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Gary Ross, of "Seabiscuit" and "The Hunger Games" fame, the movie recounts Knight's rebellious efforts to turn his hometown (Jones County, Mississippi) into a sovereign territory, during which he led an uprising against the Confederacy by leading a small rebel army made of former black slaves and white farmers.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali, Sean Bridgers, Jacob Lofland, and Keri Russell also star.

"Free State of Jones" will be arriving in theaters next month on June 24.

Free State of Jones is an epic action-drama set during the Civil War, and tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. His marriage to a former slave, Rachel, and his subsequent establishment of a mixed race community was unique in the post-war South. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War.
