"X-Men" star Michael Fassbender travels back in time to the Spanish Inquisition in the very first trailer for "Assassin's Creed," the highly anticipated action-adventure film that's based on Ubisoft's best-selling video game franchise.

Also starring Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard, the film is set in a world where a high-tech machine, called "Animus," allows a person to "see, hear, and feel" the memories of his or her ancestor in a fully interactive and immersive experience. In the case of Fassbender's incarcerated character, Callum Lynch (which is a character created specifically for the movie), he travels back 500 years to trace the footsteps of his long-dead predecessor, who had served as a highly-trained assassin for an ancient secret society that fought against a tyrannical organization.

"Assassin's Creed" is directed by acclaimed Australian helmer Justin Kurzel (Snowtown), who has just worked with both Fassbender and Cotillard on 2015's gritty adaptation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth."

The film, which co-stars Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Khalid Abdalla, and Michael K. Williams, is currently scheduled for a worldwide release at the end of the year, starting December 21st.

synopsis:
