Now that Mother's Day has passed, it's time to start thinking about dear ol' Dad. But in Ethan Hawke's new baseball movie "The Phenom," his character doesn't seem to be exactly in the running for Father of the Year. Check out the trailer for the upcoming sports drama where Hawke plays an abusive father to a young baseball player who is blessed with a pitching arm that has landed him in the big leagues.

After throwing a barrage of wild pitches, however, rookie pitcher Hopper Gibson (Johnny Simmons) is sent back down to the minors to learn how to regain control of his fastball. But after a therapy session with the team's psychologist (played by Paul Giamatti), Hopper discovers his relationship with his overbearing father (Hawke) seems to be the one thing that's keeping him off his game.

Written and directed by Noah Buschel (Glass Chin, The Missing Person), "The Phenom" will be opening in select theaters and on VOD starting on June 24th.

synopsis:
Ever since Hopper (Johnny Simmons) was a child, he has dreamed of becoming a major-league pitcher. Relentlessly pushed by his abusive father (Academy Award Nominee Ethan Hawke), he’s on the verge of becoming one of the game’s most promising players when he unexpectedly breaks down on the mound. Now Hopper’s only hope lies with an unorthodox sports therapist (Academy Award Nominee Paul Giamatti) who urges him to let go of the past so he can find success on the field.
