Nicolas Cage is trying to survive "the worst naval disaster in American history" in the first trailer for the WWII historical drama "USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage."

The film is based on the incredible true story of the 1945 sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis, in which 1,197 crewmen undertook a devastating Japanese torpedo attack, only to have the remaining men drift at sea for five days in shark-infested waters. (The tragic event was notably described in a famous speech performed by Robert Shaw in Steven Spielberg's classic "Jaws".)

Cage plays real-life Capt. Charles Butler McVay III, who was one of some 300 survivors who endured five tormenting days of dehydration, hypothermia, saltwater poisoning and deadly shark attacks. McVay would later suffer more tragedy as he was publicly blamed for the incident and controversially court-martialed for the sinking of his ship.

Directed by actor-turned-helmer Mario Van Peebles (New Jack City, Baadasssss!), the drama also stars Thomas Jane, Tom Sizemore, and features the acting debut of Cody Walker, the younger brother of the late Paul Walker.

"USS Indianapolis" will be released later in the year.
