Can a film about the Civil War be weirdly humorous? Indie filmmaker Zachary Treitz certainly seems to believe so. Injecting a bit of deadpan humor to a socially awkward main character, Treitz takes a novel approach to exploring the history of America's Civil War with his ultra-low-budget festival hit "Men Go to Battle," for which the first-time feature filmmaker took home the Best Director Award at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival.

Co-starring Rachel Korine (Spring Breakers) and Kate Lyn Sheil (STARZ's The Girlfriend Experience), who also co-wrote the script with director Treitz, "Men Go to Battle" is a darkly comic tale about two rival Kentucky brothers (played by newcomers Tim Morton and David Maloney), one of which ends up running away from his small hometown after an embarrassing incident -- only to later find himself fighting for the Union army during the 1862 Battle of Perryville.

Coming off a strong festival run, "Men Go to Battle" is now slated to hit theaters on July 8th. Watch the film's trailer, above.

synopsis:
Most Americans predict that the Civil War will end by Christmas, but Henry and Francis Mellon couldn't care less. Bracing for another winter on their struggling farm in rural Kentucky, the brothers have become suffocatingly close. Francis' practical jokes become more and more aggressive until the night he accidentally injures Henry in a drunken fight. After humiliating himself in front of a daughter of the town's preeminent family, Henry disappears in the night. Months later, Francis learns that Henry has joined the Union army, and the two are left to find out separately what the approaching war will bring.
