Following the success of his vampire-centric mockumentary "What We Do in the Shadows," New Zealand comedian Taika Waititi has returned to the director's chair for his new offbeat adventure comedy "Hunt for the Wilderpeople," which has received a brand-new U.S. trailer.

Starring Jurassic Park's Sam Neill and 13-year-old newcomer Julian Dennison, the New Zealand-set film is based on Kiwi author Barry Crump's 1986 novel "Wild Pork and Watercress" about a young chubby Maori boy (Dennison) who, after getting in trouble with social welfare officials, decides to flee into the wilderness with the reluctant help of his grouchy foster uncle (Neill). When the boy is mistakenly identified as missing, his uncle becomes the subject of a nationwide manhunt.

Written for the screen by Waititi, the movie -- which is already a box-office hit in its native country of New Zealand -- also stars fellow Kiwi comedian Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords) and "Whale Rider" actress Rachel House.

On a side note, Waititi, despite his background in comedy, has been attached to direct the forthcoming Marvel sequel "Thor: Ragnarok," which goes into production soon and will be released next year.

Premiering to glowing reviews at both Sundance and SXSW this year, "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" will be making its stateside bow in the summer, hitting theaters on June 24th.

synopsis:
Ricky (Julian Dennison) is a defiant young city kid who finds himself on the run with his grumpy foster uncle (Sam Neill) in the wild New Zealand bush. A national manhunt ensues and the two are forced to put aside their differences and work together to survive in this hilarious and heartfelt adventure.
