IFC has released the trailer for "Weiner," the acclaimed stranger-than-fiction documentary about disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner and his failed New York mayoral run in 2013.

The behind-the-scenes film, which premiered to strong reviews at this year's Sundance and took home the festival's Grand Jury Prize, is directed by Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg, who were given unfettered access to Weiner during his disastrous attempt at a political comeback after a 2011 sexting scandal turned him into a national joke.

Weiner has since stated that he regrets allowing the filmmakers to film his ill-advised mayoral campaign, which resulted in an embarrassing loss, in which he finished fifth place with less than 5 percent of the vote. Weiner also has stated that he does not intend to see the documentary as it is a sharp reminder of a "brutally difficult time" in his life.

"Weiner" will open in select theaters on May 20th and then be made available on VOD beginning May 26th.

synopsis:
Sexts, lies, and Carlos Danger: watch the wildest political meltdown in recent history as it unfolds. It’s 2013 and Anthony Weiner -- still reeling from the sex scandal that ended his political career two years earlier -- is back in the spotlight as he mounts an audacious comeback campaign for New York City mayor. But it's not long before history repeats itself and new sexting allegations leave Weiner and his aides scrambling to contain the damage. Granted unfettered access to the candidate and his campaign, filmmakers Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg capture a jaw-dropping, behind-the-scenes look at the political machine as it breaks down. Winner of the 2015 Sundance Grand Jury Prize.
