In what will likely be another award-worthy performance for Meryl Streep, the three-time Oscar-winner plays "Florence Foster Jenkins," an early 20th century New York heiress who was known as "the worst singer in the world."

But if you think the movie is merely a simple comedy about a woman with poor singing abilities -- well, a newly-released featurette is here to say that the film is not a mean-spirited mockery of the would-be singer's life. It's rather a "moving and funny" portrait of an eccentric dreamer who wanted to entertain the people during a dark moment in history. It's just unfortunate she wound up being remembered for all the wrong reasons.

Directed by Stephen Frears (The Queen, Philomena) and also starring Hugh Grant and Big Bang Theory's Simon Helberg, "Florence Foster Jenkins" will open in the U.K. on May 6th, with a U.S. release scheduled for August 12th.

synopsis:
FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS is the true story of the legendary New York heiress and socialite who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great opera singer. The voice she heard in her head was beautiful, but to everyone else it was hilariously awful. Her "husband" and manager, St Clair Bayfield, an aristocratic English actor, was determined to protect his beloved Florence from the truth. But when Florence decided to give a public concert at Carnegie Hall in 1944, St Clair knew he faced his greatest challenge.
