Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda (Like Father, Like Son) once again aims for the heartstrings as he explores the bonds of sisterhood in the new Japanese drama "Our Little Sister."

When their estranged "useless" father dies, three tightly knit sisters (Haruka Ayase, Masami Nagasawa, and Kaho) take the opportunity to strike up a real relationship with their younger half-sister, a shy schoolgirl (Suzu Hirose) whom they barely know. They invite her to live with them, but soon her presence dredges up unresolved issues regarding their father's shady past as a deadbeat dad and unfaithful husband.

Based on the graphic novel "Unimachi Diary" by manga artist Yoshida Akimi, "Our Little Sister" premiered to rave reviews at last year's Cannes Film Festival. (By the way, it was just announced that Kore-eda has finished a new film, "After the Storm," and it, too, will premiere at Cannes this year.)

"Our Little Sister" will have a stateside release in the summer, opening in New York and Los Angeles on July 8 with other cities to follow.

synopsis:
"Our Little Sister," directed by internationally acclaimed director Hirozaku Kore-eda, is adapted from Yoshida Akimi's best-selling graphic novel "Umimachi Diary." Three twenty-something sisters -- Sachi, Yoshino and Chika -- live together in a large old house in the seaside town of Kamakura. When they learn of their estranged father's death, they decide to travel to the countryside for his funeral. There they meet their shy teenage half-sister Suzu for the first time and, bonding quickly, invite her to live with them. Suzu eagerly agrees, and begins a new life with her older sisters.
