HBO has released a brand-new "Game of Thrones" featurette that offers an exciting behind-the-scenes look at the show's award-winning visual effects work.

And while it's true that a lot of the movie magic is generated in the computer (dragons, digital sets, the white walkers, etc.), you'll be surprised how much of the effects are actually practical, done in the camera, and filmed with real-life stunt performers against a green screen. Or in some cases, a green-screen background that's 30 feet high and 400 feet wide. And it seems next season will only lead to more boundary-pushing visual elements, requiring the show's special effects team to grow into three FX units, whereas a Hollywood movie would normally require just one.

"Game of Thrones: Season 6" premieres Sunday, April 24 on HBO.

synopsis:
Summers span decades. Winters can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun. It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plots, lust and intrigues; to the vast and savage eastern lands; all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men...all will play the 'Game of Thrones.'
