Tapping into his inner Vin Diesel, Liam Neeson provides the deep, gravelly voice of a tree giant in the new trailer for the upcoming fantasy drama "A Monster Calls."

The film, based on the award-winning 2011 children's novel, tells the story of an unhappy 12-year-old English boy named Conor (played by newcomer Lewis MacDougall, from "Pan"), whose life takes a sharp turn when his mother (Star Wars: "Rogue One" star Felicity Jones) is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Conor's life then takes another sharp turn when he discovers his profound sadness has conjured up a fantasy world and has accidently summoned a gigantic tree monster (Neeson) to act as his temporary guardian. "Whoa, indeed."

The film is directed by acclaimed Spanish helmer Juan Antonio (J. A.) Bayona, who previously helmed the fact-based tsunami drama "The Impossible" with Naomi Watts, but first made his mark with the 2007 supernatural thriller "The Orphanage."

"A Monster Calls" is written by writer Patrick Ness, who also wrote the novel, which itself was based on an original idea by the late British author Siobhan Dowd, who died from breast cancer in 2007, at age 47, and was too sick to write the book herself.

The upcoming movie also stars Sigourney Weaver, Toby Kebbell, and Geraldine Chaplin. It's scheduled to open in theaters on December 23.
