The Jungle Book — Featurette: 'The Voices'

added: Wed, Apr 6th '16

This new featurette provides a better look at the star-studded voice cast of Disney's adventure movie "The Jungle Book," which is based on Rudyard Kipling's ageless tale of a young feral boy named Mowgli (played here by first-time actor Neel Sethi), and was the source material behind Disney's classic 1967 animated musical.

"The Jungle Book is a great story," says director Jon Favreau in the above preview. "And, as with all of my films, it always starts with the cast."

And what a cast it is. You got Bill Murray as Baloo the bear, who introduces Mowgli to "the more fun aspects of the jungle." And there's the immediately identifiable voice of Christopher Walken as King Louie, the orangutan ruler who rules over a kingdom of apes. Meanwhile, British actor Idris Elba, who has already voiced another animal character in Disney's animated blockbuster " Zootopia," plays the tiger Shere Khan, who poses a threat to Mowgli, forcing the poor man-cub out of his jungle home.

The clip also features some behind-the-scenes footage with the rest of the voice cast: Scarlett Johansson as Kaa, the python. Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito as Akela, the wolf leader. Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o (who's coming off another noted voice performance in the latest "Star Wars" movie) as Raksha, Mowgli's wolf mother. And finally Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley as the panther Bagheera, Mowgli's strict yet well-intentioned mentor. (Unfortunately, the clip doesn't show any footage of comedian Garry Shandling, who sadly died last month from a heart attack, and makes his final film performance as the voice of Ikki, the porcupine.)

"The Jungle Book" arrives in theaters next week, April 15.

Based on Rudyard Kipling's timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s classic animated film, “The Jungle Book” is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), a man-cub who's been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba), who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he's ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera (voice of Ben Kingsley), and the freespirited bear Baloo (voice of Bill Murray).

Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don't exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa (voice of Scarlett Johannsson), a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie (voice of Christopher Walken), who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire. The all-star cast also includes Lupita Nyong'o as the voice of the fiercely protective mother wolf Raksha, and Giancarlo Esposito as the voice of wolf pack's alpha male Akela. "The Jungle Book" seamlessly blends live-action with photorealistic CGI animals and environments, using up-to-the-minute technology and storytelling techniques to immerse audiences in an enchanting and lush world..
