Netflix is looking to enhance their international appeal with "Marseille," the streaming company's first ever French-language series, which could be perceived as the French answer to "House of Cards."

Set in the southern French city of Marseille, it stars veteran French actor Gerard Depardieu (Life of Pi, Cyrano de Bergerac, Green Card) as a Frank Underwood-like politician who goes head-to-head with his former protege (Benoit Magimel) in a highly contentious mayoral election -- in which Depardieu's character has held the title of mayor for over two decades.

Created and written by acclaimed French writer Dan Franck (who also wrote the critically acclaimed miniseries "Carlos"), "Marseille" will have its first two episodes directed by Florent-Emilio Siri, the French director behind the Bruce Willis thriller "Hostage" and the French action thriller "The Nest."

"Marseille" is set to premiere on Thursday, May 5th, in all territories where Netflix is available.
