Oliver Platt and Rene Russo are two wildly eccentric parents in the new trailer for the offbeat Grey Gardens-esque comedy "Frank and Cindy," which also stars Johnny Simmons (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and Jane Levy (Suburgatory).

The film is based on filmmaker Gilbert "G.J." Echternkamp's real-life dysfunctional relationship with his idiosyncratic mother and washed-up '80s rock star step-father, who were the subjects of his acclaimed 2007 documentary of the same name (in which excerpts were featured on an episode of Ira Glass' Showtime series "This American Life").

Echternkamp recounts the making of that personal documentary in the dramatized film version, in which actor Johnny Simmons portrays the director as an aspiring film student forced to move back into his parents' house to save money for film school, but soon comes up with the bright idea to keep an ongoing video diary, recording his deeply flawed parents and all their bizarre behavior on video.

Written for the screen by Echternkamp and fellow indie filmmaker Alex Holdridge (In Search of a Midnight Kiss), "Frank and Cindy" will be released on iTunes, Amazon Video, Netflix and other VOD platforms on April 4th.

synopsis:
A young aspiring filmmaker decides to make a documentary to humiliate his alcoholic father and con artist mother. What started as a joke evolves into a brutal, but often hilarious look at a flawed family coming to terms with the past and each other.
