Matthew McConaughey and Naomi Watts are a not-so-happily married couple who are struggling with addiction and a serious health issue in the new international trailer for director Gus Van Sant's latest film "The Sea of Trees."

Also starring Ken Watanabe, the character-driven drama tells the story of Arthur Brennan (McConaughey), an American science teacher who, after the dissolution of his marriage, travels to Japan where he takes a meandering journey through the notorious Aokigahara Forest, which is known as a popular destination spot for those contemplating suicide. Arthur soon meets a fellow traveler, a God-fearing Japanese businessman (Watanabe) who, too, is wrestling with strong personal demons.

"The Sea of Trees" is penned by screenwriter Chris Sparling, best known for writing the Ryan Reynolds-trapped-in-a-coffin thriller "Buried."

Despite the pedigree of its director and stars, the movie received an unenthusiastic reception at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. Which could explain why the film still doesn't have a U.S. release date. Nevertheless, it's currently scheduled to open in France and Japan next month in April.

synopsis:
Arthur Brennan treks into Aokigahara, known as The Sea of Trees, a mysterious dense forest at the base of Japan's Mount Fuji where people go to contemplate life and death. Having found the perfect place to die, he encounters Takumi Nakamura, a Japanese man who has also lost his way. The two men begin a journey of reflection and survival, which affirms Arthur's will to live and reconnects him to his love with his wife. (via imdb.com)
