Sorry Priscilla. But there's a new "Queen of the Desert." Nicole Kidman plays real-life British explorer and political diplomat Gertrude Bell in the new trailer for the early-20th-century-set biopic, which is written and directed by maverick filmmaker Werner Herzog (Rescue Dawn, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans).

The film, also starring Robert Pattinson, Damian Lewis, and James Franco, is a sweeping romantic adventure tale based on Bell's real-life travels to the Middle East, in which she braved hostile territory during the early days of the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire. Pattinson appears in the film as famed British officer/adventurer T.E. Lawrence, who you may remember was the subject of David Lean's classic 1962 bio-pic "Lawrence of Arabia." So, comparisons may be inevitable.

"Queen of the Desert" premiered last year at the Berlin Film Festival. As of yet, there's no confirmed U.S. release date, but is expected to be released sometime in the year

synopsis:
A curious and adventurous young woman eager to explore the world outside of England, Gertrude Bell (Nicole Kidman) goes to the British embassy in Tehran where she quickly falls in love with a secretary of the embassy, Henry Cadogan (James Franco). This sparks the beginning of a life-long adventure among the beautiful but misunderstood peoples and cultures of the Middle East. Along the way, her path intersects with archaeologist T.E. Lawrence (Robert Pattinson) also known as Lawrence of Arabia, and Major Charles Doughty-Wylie (Damian Lewis), the British Consul General in the Ottoman Empire.

The story of QUEEN OF THE DESERT is based on the true-life story of Gertrude Bell, who was a British political officer and archaeologist but ultimately a trailblazer on her terms. The story details the extraordinary adventures of Bell wrestling with the conflicts of love and tragedy, enemy and friend, and foreign and familiar as she sought to understand and unify people from different cultures.
