What does every great rock or rap album have in common? They were all recorded in a recording studio, generally conducted by a talented team of music technicians and producers.

In the new PBS documentary series "Soundbreaking: Stories From the Cutting Edge of Recorded Music," award-winning documentarians Jeff Dupre and Maro Chermayeff examines popular music by chronicling the history of studio technology and the modern usage of cutting-edge recording equipment.

With unprecedented access to archival footage and rare recordings, the upcoming docu-series shines a spotlight on the technical process of recorded music, while charting the sonic revolution in the 1960s and early '70s, as well as today's advances in engineering mixing.

Featuring interviews with more than 150 top musicians and music producers -- including Elton John, Ringo Starr, Brian Eno, Dave Grohl, Roger Waters, Chuck D, St. Vincent, Bonnie Raitt, famed rock producer Don Was, and Darryl McDaniels from Run-D.M.C. (should also note: the late, great Beatles producer George Martin was also a principal contributor and assisted the filmmakers in acquiring interviews) -- the first trailer for "Soundbreaking" has been released online. Just as the first two episodes of the series are about to make its world premiere today at the SXSW Film Festival.

PBS plans to premiere the eight-part music series in November.

synopsis:
Music has been a constant in human history, an intermingling of voice and instrument that for all its local variation and increasing sophistication nevertheless endured in more or less the same form for centuries. Then came recording––and music was forever transformed. Soundbreaking, an eight-part event television series, traces this ongoing sonic revolution, and explores the nexus of cutting-edge technology and human artistry that has created the soundtrack of our lives...
