Meryl Streep has the heart of an operatic lion but the voice of a dying cat in the new full-length trailer for the period dramedy "Florence Foster Jenkins," about the remarkable true story of a 76-year-old New York socialite and aspiring soprano singer who, in 1944, mustered up enough courage (and irrationality) to perform a self-funded recital at the prestigious Carnegie Hall, only to be ridiculed by audience members and newspaper critics.

Directed by acclaimed English helmer Stephen Frears (Philomena, The Queen), the film also stars Hugh Grant as Jenkins' live-in manager and close friend, St Clair Bayfield. While "The Big Bang Theory" star Simon Helberg plays Cosme McMoon, a young pianist/composer who was hired to accompany the vocally challenged "Madame Florence" and instruct her to be a better vocalist -- though it was virtually impossible as she was completely tone-deaf.

Written by Nicholas Martin, "Florence Foster Jenkins" co-stars Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation) and Tony-winner Nina Arianda. It's scheduled to open in the UK on May 6th, with a U.S. release to follow.

synopsis:
FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS is the true story of the legendary New York heiress and socialite who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great opera singer. The voice she heard in her head was beautiful, but to everyone else it was hilariously awful. Her "husband" and manager, St Clair Bayfield, an aristocratic English actor, was determined to protect his beloved Florence from the truth. But when Florence decided to give a public concert at Carnegie Hall in 1944, St Clair knew he faced his greatest challenge.
