What if John Carpenter's 1984 alien thriller "Starman" was about a strange little boy with extraordinary powers? That is perhaps the quickest way to describe "Midnight Special," the latest feature from acclaimed filmmaker Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter).

Nichols again teams up with actor Michael Shannon, who plays a devoted father trying to protect his exceptionally gifted son (played by Jaeden Lieberher, of "St. Vincent" fame) from shadowy members of the government. Adam Driver, just seen in theaters as the evil Kylo Ren in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," plays a government scientist who's afraid the boy is some kind of "weapon" -- a weapon that no doubt needs to be stopped, if not destroyed.

Seemingly constructed as one big cat-and-mouse chase or a hot pursuit/road thriller with supernatural themes, "Midnight Special" got solid reviews last month at the Berlin International Film Festival.

The film, which also stars Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, and Sam Shepard, is also scheduled to play this weekend at SXSW before officially hitting theaters next week, March 18th. In the meantime, you can enjoy this new 60-second international trailer, above.

synopsis:
In the sci-fi thriller "Midnight Special," writer/director Jeff Nichols proves again that he is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time, as a father (Michael Shannon) goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy's special powers. What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever in this genre-defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human.
