In the wake of a family tragedy, an emotionally unbalanced Scottish couple retreats from society to find solace in the woods. That's the basic premise of "Couple in a Hole," an impressionistic arthouse drama from Belgium-born writer-director Tom Geens (Menteur), which earned strong notices at the Toronto International Film Festival last year.

The film, starring Paul Higgins (In The Loop, TV's Utopia) and "Game of Thrones" actress Kate Dickie (she can currently be seen in theaters in the hit spookfest "The Witch"), has been praised for the actors' emotionally raw performances as a grieving husband-and-wife team who, while withdrawing into the wilderness, find themselves on the brink of a complete mental breakdown.

"Couple in a Hole" is getting a theatrical release in the U.K. next month, April 8th, and an international trailer has been released online. Watch it above.

synopsis:
After their isolated house is destroyed by a wildfire, John (Paul Higgins) and Karen (Kate Dickie) take refuge in the nearby forest and eke out a feral existence, staying away from the villagers in the valley below. As the couple’s backstory unfolds, the reasons for their self-imposed isolation and their deep grief become apparent. When an overly concerned local farmer Andre (Jerome Kircher) tries to help them, the couple’s relationship becomes ever more fragile and unstable leading to a violent and emotional climax.
