An Audience Award winner at the 2015 Los Angeles Film Festival, "Hostile Border" tackles the immigration issue with a suspenseful twist and a touch of gritty action.

Veronica Sixtos, a Youtube vlogger, actress, and aspiring singer from California, makes her lead film debut in this part-crime thriller, part-immigration drama, in which she plays a young undocumented immigrant woman who's been raised in America for most of her life.

When arrested for credit card fraud, she is promptly detained and deported to Mexico where she is forced to stay with her estranged cattle-ranch father (played by Julio Cedillo; "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada"). Desperate to sneak back into the States, she agrees to work for a dangerous smuggler (Roberto Urbina; Netflix's "Narcos") who promises her some "easy-easy money."

Going by the film's newly-released trailer (watch it above), it looks like some kind of cross between "Maria Full of Grace" and a tense-thriller version of "Born in East L.A."

Directed by cinematographer-turned-first-time feature helmer Michael Dwyer and co-directed by Kaitlin McLaughlin, who also wrote the screenplay, "Hostile Border" (which was previously titled "Pocha: Manifest Destiny") co-stars Jorge A. Jimenez (Narcos) and Jesse Garcia (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series).

The film is getting a theatrical and VOD release on April 15th.

synopsis:
Raised in the U.S., Claudia (22) is an undocumented immigrant living beyond her means in a twisted version of the American dream. When she’s arrested by the FBI for credit card fraud, Claudia is quickly deported to México. Speaking no Spanish and lost in her foreign “homeland,” she reluctantly takes refuge at her estranged father's cattle ranch. As she clashes with her unyielding father, her attempts to return home to the U.S. thrust her into a dangerous bond with a foreign smuggler, Ricky. Caught between her father’s sermons, Ricky's promises, and the encroaching military, Claudia must navigate a tightrope of impossible choices. Both a slow burning crime thriller and western, HOSTILE BORDER follows the transformative journey of a young woman confronting the high price of American ideals in the dark places between two cultures.
