The first trailer for "The Light Between Oceans" has been released, providing an early peek at the period film from acclaimed director Derek Cianfrance (The Place Beyond the Pines, Blue Valentine), in which recent Oscar-nominees Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) play a childless married couple who, after discovering an orphaned infant in a lifeboat, decide to raise the baby as their own.

Based on the 2012 best-selling novel of the same name by Australian author M. L. Stedman, the film casts Fassbender as Tom Sherbourne, an Australian soldier who returns home after fighting in World War I. Tom embarks on a new quieter life as a lighthouse keeper, living on a secluded Australian island with his wife, Isabel (Vikander).

When a lifeboat suddenly washes ashore near Tom's lighthouse, he discovers a screaming baby girl has survived the ocean waters. In an impulsive act of selfishness, Tom and Isabel choose to raise the baby as their own daughter -- not knowing that several years later they will randomly bump into the child's biological mother (played by a grieving Rachel Weisz) who is under the false impression that her infant daughter had tragically died at sea.

"The Light Between Oceans," in which Cianfrance also adapted the screenplay, is currently slated to be released on September 2nd.

In the years following World War I, Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender), a young veteran still numb from his years in combat, takes a job as lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, a remote island off the coast of Western Australia. As the island's sole inhabitant, he finds comfort in the monotony of the chores and the solitude of his surroundings. When he meets the daughter of the school’s headmaster, Isabel Graysmark (Alicia Vikander), in the local town of Partageuse on the mainland, Tom is immediately captivated by her beauty, wit and passion, and they are soon married and living on the island. As their love flourishes, he begins to feel again, their happiness marred only by their inability to start a family, so when a rowboat with a dead man and infant girl mysteriously washes ashore, Isabel believes their prayers may have finally been answered. As a man of principle, Tom is torn between reporting the lost child and pleasing the woman he loves, and against his better judgment he agrees to let Isabel raise the child as their own, making a choice with devastating consequences.
