The first international trailer for "The Sea Of Trees" has surfaced online, offering a bleak peek at director Gus Van Sant's Japan-set mystery drama, which stars Matthew McConaughey and Ken Watanabe as two suicidal strangers who strike up a relationship while trekking aimlessly through the infamous Aokigahara forest (a real-life location near Mount Fuji that is notoriously known for being a popular spot for suicides).

After failing to impress critics and audiences at last year's Cannes Film Festival, the moody drama, which also stars Naomi Watts as McConaughey's ailing wife, became widely identified with its harsh Cannes reception -- which could explain why the film doesn't yet have a U.S. release date.

There's also an unexpected, bitter feeling from the unpleasant fact that Watanabe, a known leukemia survivor, who is seen here introducing the film's Japanese trailer, was just reported last week for being diagnosed with stomach cancer, which has forced him to postpone his acting career for the time being.

"The Sea Of Trees," which will likely wound up being the most depressing movie of the year, is opening in Japan in April.

synopsis:
Arthur Brennan treks into Aokigahara, known as The Sea of Trees, a mysterious dense forest at the base of Japan's Mount Fuji where people go to contemplate life and death. Having found the perfect place to die, he encounters Takumi Nakamura, a Japanese man who has also lost his way. The two men begin a journey of reflection and survival, which affirms Arthur's will to live and reconnects him to his love with his wife. (via imdb.com)
