A stony-eyed Emma Watson attempts to rescue her boyfriend from an evil religious leader but instead gets slapped into submission in the new U.S. trailer for the 1970s-set thriller "Colonia," which comes from acclaimed German writer-director Florian Gallenberger (Shadows of Time, John Rabe).

In this English-speaking foreign film, which is based on "true events," the "Harry Potter" actress plays a young German woman living in early 1970s Chile whose radical-activist boyfriend (Daniel Bruhl, of "Rush" and "Inglourious Basterds" fame) is sent to a religious, rehabilitation camp when he is arrested and taken by the Chilean secret police.

Posing as a new volunteer, Watson joins the enigmatic, religious cult as she intends to help her incarcerated boyfriend escape the compound. But to do that, she will first have to face the menacing camp leader (played by John Wick's Michael Nyqvist), who not only believes lies are hidden in people's eyes but also the holy message of "truth" can be better applied with a couple stinging slaps to the face.

"Colonia" is scheduled to hit select theaters and VOD on April 15th.

synopsis:
Lena and Daniel, a young couple become entangled in the Chilean military coup of 1973.
