Veteran Amsterdam-born filmmaker Paul Verhoeven, best known in the States for directing the cult sci-fi classics "RoboCop," "Total Recall," "Starship Troopers," and as well as the campy erotic flicks "Showgirls" and "Basic Instinct," had premiered his new Dutch-language feature, "Tricked," back at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival. It made an impression, largely because it's one of the few films in history to have been generated by the public. Or at least, the screenplay was.

As the story goes, the project started out as a five-minute set-up. Verhoeven filmed the movie's opening scene from a script he co-wrote with professional screenwriters. From then on, Verhoeven invited the Dutch public to contribute story ideas for subsequent installments. And after sorting through thousands of writing submissions by non-professionals, Verhoeven and his team cobbled the best parts together into a workable script that he would shoot in multiple five-minute chapters until the melodrama was completed. It was a kind of a stop-and-go process, and the result was an user-generated story about a married businessman who is confronted by both his pregnant ex-mistress and shady business partners during his 50th birthday party.

"Tricked," which stars Dutch actors Peter Blok, Jochum ten Haaf, Sallie Harmsen, Ricky Koole, and Gaite Jansen, will be making its Stateside debut this month, opening in New York's Cinema Village on February 26th. In the meantime, check out the film's U.S. trailer, above.

synopsis:
Part behind-the-scenes documentary, part narrative feature, PAUL VERHOEVEN'S TRICKED is the result of an ambitious experiment in filmmaking. The first section follows director Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Total Recall) as he navigates the production of a crowd-sourced film. Shooting only four minutes of a prepared script, the remainder is culminated from thousands of submitted pages. In the second section, the finished film unfolds. Verhoeven's initial premise offers the hint of a plot involving a pregnant former mistress and a struggling business, but thanks to the crowd-sourced script the story that develops is anything but predictable. With a brisk pace and exhilarating zigzag of a plot, Tricked is a cliffhanger character drama that takes Verhoeven himself by surprise.
