38-year-old Hungarian filmmaker Laszlo Nemes makes an impressive feature film debut with the Golden Globe-winning Holocaust thriller "Son of Saul," which was recently nominated for the best foreign-language Oscar. Though currently playing in select theaters, Sony Pictures Classics has released a new trailer, showcasing several complimentary quotes.

Nemes, who started out as an assistant director, has been widely praised for telling a tragic and frenetic story of Saul, a Hungarian-Jewish prisoner (played by Hungarian poet and first-time actor Geza Rohrig) who is forced to work in the hellish Nazi death camps at Auschwitz. When Saul discovers the body of a young Jewish boy who resembles his son, he risks his own life to arrange a proper and dignified Jewish burial.

The drama premiered last year at the Cannes Film Festival, where it took home four awards, including the runner-up prize, the Grand Prix. And an Oscar win could very well be in the future.

synopsis:
October 1944, Auschwitz-Birkenau. Saul Auslander is a Hungarian member of the Sonderkommando, the group of Jewish prisoners isolated from the camp and forced to assist the Nazis in the machinery of large-scale extermination. While working in one of the crematoriums, Saul discovers the body of a boy he takes for his son. As the Sonderkommando plans a rebellion, Saul decides to carry out an impossible task: save the child's body from the flames, find a rabbi to recite the mourner's Kaddish, and offer the boy a proper burial.
