Check out the trailer for the upcoming re-release of legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa's 1985 classic "RAN," which has been newly restored in 4K resolution.

Loosely inspired by the Shakespearean tragedy "King Lear," the Kabuki-style historical saga, about the increasing madness of an elderly Japanese warlord (played by famed Japanese actor and frequent Kurosawa collaborator Tatsuya Nakadai) who ends up relinquishing his crown to his three conniving sons, is widely regarded as Kurosawa's "final epic masterpiece."

Originally released in 1985, "Ran" was rewarded with four Oscar nominations, including Best Director and Best Cinematography. For her work on the film, veteran Japanese costume designer Emi Wada (Hero, House of Flying Daggers) took home her first and only Oscar for Best Costume Design.

Marking its 30-year anniversary in 2015, the new 4k version of Kurosawa's classic was shown at a number of film festivals last year. The film is now gearing up for a theatrical re-release as it's scheduled to run from February 26th to March 3rd at New York's Film Forum.
