Whether it's Westeros or ancient Egypt, "Game of Thrones" actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau can't secure a peaceful kingdom as there's always someone trying to take the crown for him-or-herself. Well, in this case, it's "300" star Gerard Butler, who plays the merciless god of darkness, "Set," in the new trailer for "Gods of Egypt."

The fantasy action-adventure movie -- which, you can say, is a loose interpretation of Egyptian mythology -- casts Coster-Waldau as the ancient Egyptian god "Horus." When Set (Butler) forcibly steals his crown, Horus undertakes an epic quest to reclaim his throne. Along the way, Horus finds himself teaming up with the unlikeliest of partners, a brave young mortal man, named "Bek" (played by Maleficent's Brenton Thwaites).

Chadwick Boseman, Elodie Yung, Courtney Eaton, and Geoffrey Rush co-star.

Despite being directed by cult genre helmer Alex Proyas (The Crow, Dark City, and I, Robot), who was born in Egypt, but mostly raised in Australia, the film's cast has been criticized for its lack of diversity -- the term "whitewashing" had been used to describe the casting choices of the Egyptian Gods. Since the controversy broke last month, both Lionsgate and Proyas have issued a public apology.

"The process of casting a movie has many complicated variables, but it is clear that our casting choices should have been more diverse. I sincerely apologize to those who are offended by the decisions we made," Proyas said in a statement addressing the criticism.

"Gods of Egypt" opens February 26th.

synopsis:
In this spectacular action-adventure inspired by the classic mythology of Egypt, the survival of mankind hangs in the balance as an unexpected mortal hero Bek (Brenton Thwaites) undertakes a thrilling journey to save the world and rescue his true love. In order to succeed, he must enlist the help of the powerful god Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) in an unlikely alliance against Set (Gerard Butler), the merciless god of darkness, who has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict. As their breathtaking battle against Set and his henchmen takes them into the afterlife and across the heavens, both god and mortal must pass tests of courage and sacrifice if they hope to prevail in the epic final confrontation.
