MTV's The Shannara Chronicles: Season 1 — New Promos

Sure, it's the cable network that's responsible for such trashy reality shows as "Jersey Shore" and "Teen Mom." But MTV is aiming high with its most ambitious scripted series to date, the upcoming fantasy action drama "The Shannara Chronicles."

Check out a couple of new promos for the new ten-episode series, which hails from executive producers Jon Favreau (Iron Man) and Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (CW's Smallville and AMC's Into the Badlands).

Based on the best-selling fantasy novels by author Terry Brooks, "The Shannara Chronicles" stars Poppy Drayton (Downton Abbey), Manu Bennett (Arrow), Austin Butler (The Carrie Diaries), Ivana Baquero (Pan's Labyrinth) and John Rhys-Davies (The Lord of the Rings films).

The first two hour-long episodes are directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Wrath of the Titans), which MTV plans to premiere on Tuesday, January 5th at 10pm.

An ancient evil threatens the Elves and the Races of Man. The Ellcrys, the tree of long-lost Elven magic, is dying, unravelling the spell of Forbidding that locks the hordes of Demons away from the world. Already the fearsome Reaper is free. Only by quickening a new seed in the mysterious Bloodfire can the Ellcrys be reborn and the Forbidding made whole.

Amberle (Poppy Drayton) a young Elven girl, is chosen to undertake the quest for the Bloodfire. The way is perilous, though. Other demons besides the Reaper stalk the land. Amberle will need a protector if she is to prevail, and Wil Ohmsford (Austin Butler) heir to the elven magics of Shannara, is chosen to accompany her. Amberle’s quest and the fate of the Four Lands will rest on Wil’s ability to unlock the magic of the mysterious Elfstones of Shannara.

And he has lost all power to control them…
