Acclaimed Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Impossible, The Orphanage) is tackling the children fantasy genre with the upcoming movie "A Monster Calls," based on the award-winning 2011 novel by Patrick Ness. And Focus Features has released an early teaser trailer.

The film, which won't be released until the fall of next year, features a strong cast that includes Felicity Jones, Sigourney Weaver, Toby Kebbell, Geraldine Chaplin, and Liam Neeson as the voice of the Monster.

Newcomer Lewis MacDougall, who appeared as "Nibs" in Joe Wright's fantasy-adventure film "Pan," is making his starring debut as "Conor," a 12-year-old English boy who accidently summons a giant tree-like monster when his life with his cancer-stricken mother becomes too much to bear.

Author Patrick Ness, who also adapted the screenplay, wrote the children's novel from an original idea by the late British writer Siobhan Dowd, who, at the time, was battling breast cancer and was too sick to finish the project. The book (which features illustrations by Jim Kay) became a huge critical success, winning numerous literary awards, including the 2012 Carnegie Medal and the 2012 Greenaway Medal.

"A Monster Calls" will be hitting theaters at the tail end of 2016.

12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall) attempts to deal with his mother’s (Felicity Jones) illness and the bullying of his classmates by escaping into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales that explore courage, loss, and faith.
